Mental health apps

I’ve been talking a lot about technology lately, so might as well keep the trend going! I feel my entire life depends on my smartphone. I can check my bank statement, play a game, check the weather, get stocks, and listen to my favorite music, all from one place! Now there is an app for literally EVERYTHING! So, I thought now might be the time to make a list of my top three favorite apps, that I recommend as a Flower Mound and Southlake counselor, that are great for making sure that your mental health is in check. Plus, all of them are FREE!

Virtual Hope Box

This app has a little bit of everything. Short games to distract yourself during stressful situations, inspirational quotes, mindfulness tools, various coping skills, and even a place to keep log of all your contacts you can call in a time of needed support. This app is great for all ages, but I normally recommend it for those 12-17 years old.

Breathe2Relax

This app helps you with deep breathing. It walks you through the proper technique, and is a great guide for the process. It also allows you to track your feelings, to see how deep breathing helps with stress, anxiety, and/or anger! This app is great for all ages who need a quick reminder to take a deep breath.

Calm: Meditation to Relax, Focus & Sleep Better (free, but need to create an account)

This app has great guided meditations, and is wonderful for SLEEP! Mindfulness is an ideal tool for anxiety and depression. This app helps to walk you through the process. This is perfect for when you are first trying mindfulness techniques, and aren’t sure how to get started. This app is good for all ages. Some children might need help navigating the app itself, but guided meditation can help with any age! There are even specific meditation stories that are geared toward various age groups.

I know I just talked about the importance of unplugging from technology. I also fully understand how hard that is! Even as a counselor, I struggle with self-care. So, take advantage of these apps, and when you have a spare 15 minutes, do some self-care!
